We are situated 1 minute from the main thoroughfare of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The hotel is surrounded by the walls and ramparts built in Queen Elizabeth the 1st to protect Berwick. We have a licensed bar and restaurant (with seating for 50) and are open all day, every day. We do cater for functions. Bus Parties by Appointment. |

By all reports the Hotel was built in the late 1890s, however in 1913 it was redesigned. A local carriage company in Chappel Street found it increasingly difficult to get round the building, so the corner was "cut off" This making the Dining Room and Room 3 rather an odd shape.
The bar was called the Rose & Thistle, no doubt to blend in with the area throughout its historical changes between Scotland and England. The original bar mirror is in the bar downstairs, another mirror found in the depths of the cellar hangs in room 4. |

The Restaurant was originally the bar, and frequently used by the soldiers from the Barracks. The bar was fondly referred to as the "Last Stop". Our new bar area was once the Snug and frequented by the women folk who were not allowed to be seen in the bar. The entrance to the snug has been blocked off, but can be seen on the photo in the dining room. |

Our kitchen area was once the Pool Room, where many a competition has been held.
In 1984 it changed hands, and no longer traded as a Public House. Vaux brewery at the time supplied the Rose & Thistle, so they put a covenant on the premises, in order for them to reclaim any future orders should it start as a public house again. No other Brewery could or would be able to sell stock to the proprietor without Vaux giving permission, and of course they wouldn't give permission. |

The place was then to become a Cream Tea or High Tea kind of place, to be called Café Select. They ceased trading in 1986, after 2 years.
Then the name changed to The Cobbled Yard Hotel, and then underwent a lot of changes. The living quarters upstairs were changed into five en suite rooms, downstairs dining room seating changed to allow 45 maximum of people, at any one time. The snug became the bar area. Vaux supplied us with our spirits and ales up until the Brewery ceased trading in 1998. Since then Federation supplied us until they ceased trading as a Brewery in 2004. Now we get supplied from a local Brewery called Belhaven Brewery of Dunbar |

FROM THE NORTH At the Morrison's supermarket roundabout follow the town centre signs in. Once through the Castlegate Archway, (facing you will be the Town Hall) take a left at the first mini roundabout, (Skellys Butcher shop on corner). We are a 100 yards along Walkergate on the right hand side. |

FROM THE SOUTH After the Scremerston Turnoff sign take a right at the next roundabout (2nd Exit) following the sign that says Spittal Tweedmouth and Berwick. Follow the road in. At the next roundabout (Sports Centre on your left) go straight over. Follow road in until next roundabout, take another right here (3rd Exit). Straight over the River Tweed Bridge. Next minroundabout take a left, and the next roundabout take a right (Skellys Butchers on the corner) We are a 100 yards along Walkergate on the right hand side.
